Ah, crap, no, that's not right. Let me reiterate.
Imagine time as a series of circular currents, within a circular stream of infinite circumference. Each current flows counterdirectional to the two beside it. Like this diagram:
Current 1 flows clockwise, current 2 flows anticlockwise, current 3 flows clockwise, and so on. They can only flow in these directions - there's no way to move backwards through them. However, if you were to wait for that current to complete a full revolution from where you were when you left it, you'll get back to the same situation but in a different time period.
Because there's nothing seperating these currents, they can mix with each other. This is how ghostly phenomena happen - they're echoes across time from a current where that person has not yet died. Dopplegangers (or the phenomena of 'seeing yourself') are the same - echoes from a nearby time stream that has happened to cross into ours. Premonitions - that's the perception of yourself in another time stream being relayed across.
Why the infinite timestreams? This is my take on the multiple universes theory.
Any time, and in any place, where a choice or event could go differently - even the most miniscule of choices or events - it has, in another timestream. Any time that hapepns, another timestream appears. Timestreams all flow at the same speed, so there's no difference on how it happens. We are the 'control' timestream - that is, the timestream that spawns other timestreams. Our timestream flows underneath all the other timestreams - think of us like an undercurrent.
